70th Anniversary of the Cosmopolitan Ladies Club of Cologne

Oct 24 our 70th anniversary   Finally the day arrived! We had been talking about and planning this event for several months – the 70th anniversary of the Cosmopolitan Club. The Glashaus Restaurant in the Hyatt Regency Hotel of Cologne was the setting. Just opposite the cathedral, on ‘the other side’ of the Rhine, we enjoyed a unique view. Even the weather was perfect. An extensive selection of cakes was set up for us, Kaffee und Kuchen, as the Germans say, but a British touch was also included by way of scones, clotted cream and jam. We toasted with a complimentary glass of prosecco (from the hotel), then there were  3 short speeches: the British Consul General Rafe Courage, our president  Barbara, and a longtime member Dee. Each speech presented a different aspect of the club, ranging from British-German friendship to a look back at the beginnings of the club. Meanwhile, one of our very own, Lene, was busy taking photos, which she has promised to put together for us into a photo book. And, of course, a group photo was taken. 28 attended this special gathering: Rafe Courage and his wife Theresa, 25 current members and 1 former member, now living in Cornwall. We had plenty of time to move around, chat with each other and just enjoy the afternoon. The ambience was perfect. I trust I can speak for all of us in saying ‘a good time was had by all’.
