OUT – Visit to St. Gereon with John Sykes on 20th May 2026

The last of our OUT meetings for this Cosmo year was a guided tour of one of John Sykes’ favourite churches, St Gereon. dating back to the mid 5th century. John was able to make its complicated architectural history understandable, bringing us to its reopening, after WW2 damage, in 1984. Our extensive tour covered the Crypt and the choir with the alter. The stained glass windows deserve special attention, as there are some unusual examples: the grey ones are unique and let in a lot of light. In general the church is full of light and very spacious. This was a fitting tour to finish our Cosmo year and we’re looking forward to more tours with John. His Cologne tours are an interesting contrast to his hiking tours around the rim of England, which have fascinated us for the past several years. 13 ladies were present for this tour.
