We were so fascinated by John Sykes’ talk in Feb. about hiking around the borders of England that we invited him back to hear about the next leg of his project. Certainly “project” is the right term in this case, as it is more than just a hike. In April he continued along the English-Welsh border, esp. Offa’s Dyke Path down to Bristol. His talk was enhanced by many impressive photos: the amazing huge oaks along the dyke path, aquaducts and canals, the nature reserve near Montgomery Canal, just to mention a few. He also included his impressions of the landscape, for example in Shropshire Hills, a lonely area not yet discovered by tourists. Despite its hills and unmarked paths, John emphasized that this area is well worth the struggle! He also mentioned the “book town” , Hay-on-Wye. He was there on a Sunday so (thank heavens) the shops were closed! The ruins at Tintern Abbey are also worth visiting. For all the details, we can check out his website; www.beatingthebounds.eu and on Instagram(johnstuartsykes). He will continue his hike along the Southwest Coast Path, basically, Cornwall, which will be much more populated, different from the hikes he has completed so far. We’re already looking forward to the next ‘episode’. 12 ladies attended this very interesting IN-meeting.
