IN-Talk by Margot on her visit to Canada on 28th February 2024

Once again, one of our very own gave us a talk, Margot, about her cruise on the Great Lakes in Canada and the US.

Since this is not such a common route, compared to Caribbean or Mediterranean cruises, we were all the more interested in what she had to tell us. The cruise, on the MS Hamburg, began in Montreal. Its title, Indian Summer, indicates that we’re getting into autumn, meaning anything as fas as weather is concerned. Margot assured us that they were basically lucky , encountering no big storms.
The cruise began in Montreal and covered 4 of the great lakes. Lake Superior was not part of the itinerary, but there were enough highlights to make the 14 days very interesting. Margot enhanced her talk with photos, giving us some idea of the vastness of the lakes, and of the cities they explored.
Leaving Montreal on the St. Lawrence River, they arrived at Kingston, Ontario, on Lake Ontario. They were still in Canada. The cruise went back and forth from Canada to the US.
Every day there was a city to explore. Margot mentioned that one of the most interesting moments for her was passing through the locks from Lake Ontario to Lake Erie, the whole system called Welland Canal. The MS Hamburg is the only passenger ship able to go through these locks.
The next stop was Cleveland, with its Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Each city they visited had its special flair, Margot underlined this with nice photos.. There was Detroit, with its Henry Ford Museum. Then a day at sea. Heading north, a wine-growing area, of course, pumpkin stands, getting ready for Halloween, it was the end of Sept.
The next big city was Chicago, which alone deserves a couple of days, but as always with cruises, you just get a glimpse at some of the highlights.
Michigan with Mackinac Bridge connecting the Upper and Lower peninsulas of Michigan going over to Mackinac Island an island without cars. Toronto.Niagra Falls. finally, ending the cruise in Quebec.
Margot packed so much into this talk that I can’t do her justice here. Luckily she’s a Cosmo lady so we can ask her questions any time. 15 attended this talk, the 2nd in our new year, 2024. There are a lot of intersting things still to come. Stay tuned!
