OUT – “Susanna” exhibition at the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum on 25th January 2023

After a nice Italian lunch at the L’Osteria near the Gürzenich, we had a short walk to the W-R Museum where we viewed the exhibit “Susanna”. This was our first museum visit in quite a while and the exhibit has gotten a lot of publicity, so we were anticipating an interesting afternoon.       Countless artists, from the Middles Ages to modern times , have been inspired by this Biblical legend of an innocent woman accused of adultery. Two elders sentenced Susanna to death after sexually harassing her. Then she was saved by the prophet, Daniel, and the two elders put to death. Just to name a few of the renowned artists inspired by this legend : Delacroix, Tintoretto, Lovis Corinth, Rembrandt, Manet.  This extensive exhibit is the first of its kind. In connection with the Me Too movement, it is very topical, showing that since Biblical times, women have been the target of injustice in the male-dominated world. The numerous thought-provoking objects and images in this relatively compact show have given us something to think about.      17 club members attended this first OUT meeting of the year 2023.
